It’s all about color these days
No more pale yellows, golds, or off-white colors that we may remember from days passed.
One of the big trends for 2020 is to have bold, vibrant colors. Earth tones and neutrals will always be popular, but especially more so with the increased interest in anything rustic.
One of the biggest changes is in the color palette of the Shag. The iconic rug of the 70s and early 80s was well-known for its gold, green and brown shades. Now, however, you can get these surfaces in any color from a funky purple, subtle and calming blue and green to dramatic red, orange and black.
If you love color, but can’t take too much, get a neutral carpet and layer it with a brightly colored area rug.

Other ways it’s changed
- Performance. We know about DNA in our cells, but what about in carpet fibers? Some have the stain resistance built right into the fiber. That means it’s permanent, so there’s no need to keep applying more and more chemicals. Newer fibers, such as Triexta and EverStrand are also ultra-tough so be sure to tell your retailer if you have a large family, pets or any other need for extra durability in flooring.
- Digital print patterns. It used to be that designs were right at the top of fibers. That meant the designs could eventually fade. With digital technology, the patterns lie throughout the thread, so there's no chance of diminishment. You'll see anything today from florals to geometrics and other bold prints.
As a final note, don’t skimp on padding. Just as rugs protect the floor, the cushion protects the rug and sets the foundation. Always keep your carpet looking its best with professional deep cleaning and protect your warranty; many manufacturers include clauses that require professional cleaning.
