Carpet Flooring

How to choose the best carpet flooring for you

When choosing carpeting, the most important thing to remember is to focus on your needs; keep in mind that everyone has different requirements, so the rug at your neighbor's house may not be suitable for you.

When this popular floor covering is aligned with your lifestyle and decor, you'll be guaranteed to select a quality surface that will look great and perform well for years. Do a little research to familiarize yourself with terms, learn the pros and cons of different fibers and styles, and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Always focus on your needs

You’ll see thousands of samples in the carpet store, all from different mills and in countless colors, patterns, styles, qualities, and price points. It can be a little distracting to be surrounded by so much beauty but focus on some questions. Is your family large with kids and pets, or small and quiet? Do you need extra durability and stain resistance? Do you entertain frequently and have a lot of foot traffic?

Also, think about the room in which it's to be installed and how you plan to use it. Every room has its priorities and challenges, so what may be suitable for the bedroom may not work well for the stair, where people and pets run up and down all day.

What is your home’s overall decor?

No, it doesn’t need to be an exact match, but it should harmonize with the rest of the furnishings. After all, a rug in the country style would be jarring in a California Coastal-style residence!

Learn basic terms

While there are acrylics and blends, the five most commonly chosen fibers are broken into naturals and synthetics. Wool is natural. Synthetics include nylon, polyester, olefin, and Triexta.  Density, how closely the yarns are tufted together, is a good indicator of quality; there should be a label with a 3,000 to 5,000 number. Styles include straight loop, or Berber; Saxony, cut and loop, frieze, or various cut piles.
